Prior to my visit to London, gluten free, dairy free, and egg free fish and chips was a meal I had only enjoyed once in my life.
It is one of those meals that you immediately think of when you envision visiting the UK.
At least it was for me!
Light, flaky fish in a crispy batter with double fried chips were the things on my mind.
It is no surprise then that I was determined to find the best places for allergy-friendly fish and chips while in the UK.
After research, reading countless menus, and quite a few emails back and forth with restaurants, I had narrowed down my list.
There were two places that stuck out and were very highly reviewed.
As soon as we landed, I was excited to get to these fish and chip shops to taste what the national favorite was all about.

I felt lucky to have two different places to try and compare.
Each place had it’s positives, and both are definitely worth a stop if you need a place that can cater to food allergies.
Let’s jump right into it!
Hobson’s Fish And Chips
Hobson’s was my first stop to try gluten free, dairy free, and egg free fish and chips in London.
Walking in you immediately see a counter where you can order food to take out.
We planned to eat in and let the server behind the counter know. She seated us quickly and with a smile.
The restaurant itself is clean and beautifully decorated.
The menu has a special section showing the gluten free beer batter options.
I ordered a cider, the cod, and chips to share with my travel companion.
Also, the onion rings on the menu got me so excited so I had to order those to split as well.
I was beyond impressed with the fact the fish and chips came out quickly and were extremely hot and fresh.
The flavor of the beer batter was delicious.
It was a thick batter on the fish – slightly crispy on the outside but still soft on the inside.
The big thing that caught me off guard was that the cod was battered and fried with it’s skin still on.
This may be common, but as someone who has only had fish and chips once, it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting.
I chose to remove the skin which did take some picking around before eating. I could have done without it.
That said, the fish was fresh, flaky and delicious.
My very favorite thing from the meal was the onion rings, probably because it was something special I wasn’t expecting.
Overall, this meal was a huge treat. I felt very happy and satisfied when I left!

Mayfair Chippy
I also enjoy amazing gluten free, dairy free, and egg free fish and chips at Mayfair Chippy in the Mayfair area of London.
It is a small, cozy restaurant with the most charming decor.
I highly recommend making a reservation in advanced. They get extremely busy and if you don’t have a reservation you probably won’t be able to get a table.
There are so many outstanding reviews of the food at Mayfair Chippy, which made me hopeful to try it.
After some research, it still wasn’t clear online if their fish and chips were safe for those avoiding gluten, dairy and eggs.
To verify, I sent an email with my concerns and it was quickly answered.
I felt a lot better after they assured me I could get a safe meal and avoid my allergens.
For those who are vegan, they even offer vegan fish and chips!
The other benefit of vegan options on their menu is that they had the option for vegan tartar sauce.
Fish and chips are so much better with tartar sauce! Sadly, it is something those of us with egg allergies never get to enjoy when eating out.
For a fair comparison, I ordered the cod here as well. Of course, I also got the chips, a pear cider, and the vegan tartar sauce to round it out.
The fish was cooked exactly how I like it. It was light, flaky and perfect. Not oily or greasy whatsoever.
The batter was light, and had the perfect crispy crunch. Just what I was hoping to find!
The chips were double fried, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
The tartar sauce was tangy, fresh, bright, herby, and salty. The ideal pairing for the fish.
If you can’t tell, I was in fish and chips heaven!
Full disclosure: I actually made a reservation and ate here the next night as well – it was that good.
Conclusion
There were big differences between the batter at the two restaurants.
Yet, both restaurants offered excellent gluten free, dairy free, and egg free fish and chips options.
It was such a treat to enjoy a classic meal while in London.
I was able to have a full experience by not only seeing the sights, but also eating the local food!
If you have food allergies, I hope this helps you too. We should all be able to have a rich and enjoyable experience while visiting London!
Now I want to hear from you – Are you visiting London and excited to try some allergy-friendly fish and chips? What type of batter do you prefer on your fish and chips?
