If you’re looking for a day trip from London that has beauty, history, charm and a potential to see a member of The Royal Family, then Windsor Castle should be at the top of your list!

Windsor Castle is the largest and oldest castle that is still inhabited by the monarchs. It is full of beautiful historic pieces and will immerse you in an experience unlike any other.

When in London, I had left one day open for us to pick an activity that sounded fun and after talking to locals, this was the most recommended activity.

I am really glad we had the opportunity to see it, as it gave us a completely different view at the personal side of how the Royal Family lived for centuries.

It is also worth noting that the Queen still spends many of her free weekends here! We were very excited to find out she was there the day we visited.

From where we were located in London at Amba Hotel Charing Cross, it took roughly an hour and a half to get to Windsor Castle.

The easiest way to find how long it may take for you to get from your location to Windsor Castle would be to enter it into the Maps App on your phone. From there, select the “Transit” option to get the estimated time.

Windsor Castle Train Stations:

There are two train stations near Windsor Castle:

  • Windsor & Eaton Central
  • Windsor & Eaton Riverside

It is important to know this, specifically when heading back to London. We made the mistake of assuming the station we came into (Riverside) was the only one, and as a result we were confused trying to find the right train when leaving.

Keep in mind, if your tickets are like ours, you may come into Windsor & Eaton Riverside, but will need to leave from Windsor & Eaton Central.

Getting To Windsor Castle From The Train Station

After arriving at the train station, you will likely be directly below Windsor Castle.

To get up to the entrance, you will walk around the stone wall leading through the town and up a hill.

This road will wrap around the wall and you will see Windsor Castle on your left.

Follow the path to the top of the hill and take a left, where you will walk past the exit. Keep going straight and you will see the entrance on your right hand side.

I used to live in London for 5 years or so. These are good tips with the train journey, this will be helpful for those who are not familiar with the area. Another good tip is to hire a car for the day, sometimes this can actually work out cheaper than train tickets for multiple passengers. With the flexibility of a car you can also take a detour to Kew Gardens or Hampton Court Palace. UK roads are quite safe (once you manage to get out of London haha 😀 )
