Allergy-Friendly Eating in Rome, Italy - My guide to some of the best gluten free, dairy free, vegan and allergy-friendly restaurants and eateries in Rome, Italy.

Rome has become one of my very favorite cities for traveling with food allergies. I had my initial reservations about whether or not there would be options to meet my needs considering my many food allergies. Luckily, after arriving my mind was quickly put at ease.

Roman food focuses on simple dishes that highlight what is fresh and seasonal. This is great for someone like me with multiple allergies. That’s because fewer ingredients means less fear of what is in the food, it also seemed to make it quite a bit easier to adjust dishes according to my needs.

Gluten Free in Rome

Let’s start with gluten. Gluten free options are widely available throughout Rome for everything from pizza crust to bread to pasta. There is no shortage of gluten free options. If you have concerns about cross-contamination, there are actually many 100% gluten free restaurants in Rome as well!

Dairy Free and Vegan in Rome

As for dairy free and vegan options concerns: olive oil is the oil of choice which is a nice change from the butter-heavy cooking in the US. To my joy and surprise, many restaurants offered dairy free and vegan cheese alternatives as options! As for the pasta, I was told over and over again to stick with spaghetti. That is because many other pastas, including fettuccine, contain egg.

A note about breakfast in Italy:

Most hotels in Italy offer free breakfast, including the ones mentioned in my post about The Perfect 10 Day Italy Itinerary.

I recommend checking with your hotel about their breakfast when booking your stay. Many will offer options to accommodate your particular food allergies.

All of the hotels I stayed at did offer options. Yet, I did not choose to have breakfast any of the mornings. That’s mostly because I was still full from eating the night before!

Voglia di Pizza

Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options

Voglia di Pizza was just a few blocks walk from our hotel. As soon as we came here, I wished I had come sooner! They offer two menus, one regular and one gluten free.  The gluten free menu is extensive, and the portions are extremely generous. We had pizza, pasta, and an artichoke bruschetta – all of which were amazing!

Pizza in Trevi

Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options

Located just around the corner from the Trevi fountain is Pizza in Trevi. They offer many gluten free and vegan options including both pizza and pasta. When I spoke with the staff about my allergies they were knowledgable and able to accommodate my needs. It had some of the best service we experienced in all of Italy. This is a great place to stop and grab a bite to eat!

Mimi e Coco

Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free Options

Mimi e Coco was the restaurant with the most fun atmosphere we encountered in Rome. It is a very small place with excellent and attentive staff, an eclectic mix of music and great drinks. The options are limited for vegans. That said, they were able to easily accommodate all of my other allergies! They had some of the most delicious potatoes I have ever eaten.

Origano Campo de’ Fiori

Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options

I dream about eating at Origano Campo de’ Fiori again! Their menu was exceptional with gluten free and vegan options. I was able to get a gluten free and vegan carbonara with the most delightful parmesan cheese. It was a real treat to enjoy a “traditional” roman dish even with my food allergies!

La Soffitta Renovatio

Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options

Just one block from the Vatican City walls is La Soffitta Renovatio. We ate here on our first full day in Rome. This experience opened my eyes to the amazing food available as well as the beautiful spirit of the Roman people! After being seated I immediately informed the staff of my allergies. Without hesitation, the staff walked me through every dish that could be made for me on their menu.

We ate pizza, pasta, and they even made me a special dessert to especially meet my needs! The food was outstanding – especially the gluten free pizza crust! It made for a wonderful experience I cannot wait to have again.

Il Gelatone

Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options

Not far from the Colluseum and Forum is the delicious Il Gelatone. Beautifully displayed in their sparkling clean cases are a huge selection of both gluten free and vegan options. This quickly became our favorite gelato spot in Rome.

Many of the flavors are marked as vegan, yet, I suggest asking them which options may work for you. That is because they actually had more available than what were formally labeled.
