I am not exactly sure what I expected when I first planned my trip to Barcelona, but I know I was thrilled beyond belief when I arrived and really started exploring all the city had to offer.
The best way I can think to explain my experience is to say that Barcelona is a wonderful mix of old and new. The Catalonians seem to have taken the best things from each part of their history and mixed them together to make the present day – this is true in the culture, architecture and even the food!
It is always exciting to see growing awareness and understanding of food allergies throughout the world as I travel, especially when it means that local dishes have been altered to remove my food allergies. I love not feeling like I am missing out on an experience!
For my vegan friends I will say, although meat and seafood do play a big role in regional dishes throughout Spain, I did not have any trouble finding plenty of vegan restaurants – that served gluten free dishes as well – throughout Barcelona!
Messie Sin Gluten Gracia
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
As you may be able to gather from the name of this restaurant – it is 100% gluten free! I was able to create my own pasta dish to accommodate my food allergies (including tomato) and absolutely loved it. This place is popular and was one of the busiest restaurants I visited in Barcelona. My recommendation would be to try to get a reservation to make sure you get in.
Verde Y Chile
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
If you’re planning a day down by the water, this restaurant is where you want to eat! It is super small but has absolutely fabulous vegan food, drinks, and desserts. The flavors are unique and satisfying. I just wished I was staying closer so I could have enjoyed more meals at this great spot.
Copasetic Barcelona
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
If you have food allergies and are going to Barcelona, you absolutely do not want to miss this place! They offered gluten free and vegan bread and desserts, even vegan (egg-free) aioli for my sandwich. That is not something I often find! The food was fresh and clearly made from scratch. It is located in a beautiful area and was one of the most enjoyable walks I took while in Barcelona.
Cat Bar
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
I love being able to try the local dishes, and in Barcelona the only way I could do that was at Car Bar. This restaurant is 100% vegan and 100% delicious! They easily accommodate those with gluten allergies as well, which isn’t always the case at vegan restaurants. This place is a special find!
La Lluna Restaurant
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free
Although not the most accommodating restaurant as far as options considering all of my allergies, I feel like La Lluna is worth mentioning because they did do very well with gluten free options. In addition, the service and setting were great and they offered me options to create the best meal possible.
Patagonia Beef & Wine
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free
Vegans, this place is not for you but if you are a carnivore, make sure to scheduled a time to check this amazing restaurant out. The service is exceptional with extra care taken to make sure there was not cross-contamination for my food. One of my favorite foods while in Barcelona were their french fries with a bright and flavorful chimichurri sauce. I never would have put those together until that experience but it was delightful!
Teresa Carles
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
If you’re looking for a plant based restaurant, Teresa Carles is the place you want to go. The menu is vegetarian and serves delicious veggie dishes that can satisfy even the biggest meat eater. They even had a cake that was gluten free and vegan I could eat for dessert!
Gelaaati Di Marco
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
Yes, I did save the best for last! Every single day I was in Barcelona I made a stop at Gelaaati Di Marco. The gluten free and vegan gelato here are absolutely divine and worth a bit of a walk. I loved the added benefit of being able to stand in the square and people watch as I enjoyed my gelato each day!
