I can think of no better place to spend your honeymoon than on the beautiful islands of Hawaii!

Of course, I may be biased because that is exactly where I spent my own honeymoon after getting married in Kauai.

After lots of thought, consideration and planning, I made my plans- and this trip was everything I wanted it to be! I really believe I created one of the best itineraries around for any honeymoon to Hawaii.

It combines something for everyone, with just enough activity and relaxation to allow you to recharge without missing a thing.

What makes Hawaii the best place to honeymoon?

No matter the time of year, Hawaii is a warm and inviting place to be. Not only the weather, but also the attitude that comes with the spirit of the islands.

I could go on and on about my love of Hawaii but in short: the weather, the views, the welcoming people, the activities, the food, the world-class resorts – and if you’re a US citizen, you don’t even need a passport to visit!

The islands are close together which makes travel between them simple. Yet, each island has a unique personality! Different activities to do, things to experience, places to eat, and scenery to enjoy.

The 3 Islands You’ll Visit During Your Honeymoon To Hawaii:

Kauai –

Kauai, HI - Enjoy sun, sand and sea in Hawaii! Visit three beautiful Hawaiian islands with this spectacular and relaxing honeymoon itinerary.

First you’ll head to Kauai, the oldest in the Hawaiian chain of islands. As a result of it’s age, Kauai has had a lot of time to grow into a beautiful, lush landscape.

Most of Kauai in undeveloped which means it is a lot more calm and peaceful than some of the other islands you will visit.

Since you will be coming down from the craziness of having a wedding, starting your honeymoon in Kauai is a great way to be able to take a deep breath.

You can slow down, relax, spend time with each other and see some of the most spectacular sights in all of Hawaii.

Oahu –

Oahu, HI - Enjoy sun, sand and sea in Hawaii! Visit three beautiful Hawaiian islands with this spectacular and relaxing honeymoon itinerary.

The second island you will visit during your honeymoon in Hawaii is Oahu. This lively island has something for everyone!

You’ll stay on the gorgeous Waikiki Beach, eat delicious food, learn about our history at Pearl Harbor, dive into the culture of the islands at the Polynesian Cultural Center, and check out the famous surfing beaches of the north shore.

Maui –

The last place you’ll explore during your honeymoon is the vibrant island of Maui.

There is no shortage of beautiful beaches, outstanding dining options, outdoor adventures, and scenic drives on Maui.

Maui is relaxing and energizing at the same time. Even when doing activities in Maui, as there are many amazing things to do, you will still be able to soak up the peace and serenity of the island.

It is the perfect balance and a great place to spend your last few days of your honeymoon enjoying each other’s company.

Traveling Between Islands During Your Honeymoon In Hawaii

Flying between islands is truly a breeze in Hawaii. With this itinerary, because we go in the order of the islands, all of the flights are under an hour. You get in the air, get a drink, and are on your way back down.

Another benefit of these short flights is that it can be a good place for you to splurge without breaking the bank. Treat yourselves to first class seats for around $50 more and you’ll be feeling like royalty!

Getting Around On The Islands During Your Honeymoon

The easiest way to get around while visiting Hawaii is by renting a car. All of the hotels listed in the itinerary below have valet parking which means you don’t have to worry about where you’ll park your car!

In places like Kauai, renting a car is often your only real option, as there are limits for using cabs or ride apps. In fact, while in Kauai we decided to use a ride app to visit a restaurant and at the end of the meal, we were stranded as there was no one else available for a ride home. Luckily, we still had friends staying in the nearby area that could come and bring us back to our hotel! Truly, driving in Kauai is extremely easy, as there is one major two lane road that you must use to get around the island, and the speed limit is generally between 30-45 mph.

Now in Oahu, there is much more public transportation available and tours that have transportation offered. If you don’t feel comfortable driving in a new area or “busier” city, then that could be a great option for you!

Maui is another place where I would absolutely recommend renting a car, and if you plan to do the road to Hana (which you should!) you should absolutely get a Jeep or other 4WD vehicle.

How Long To Stay On Each Island During Your Honeymoon In Hawaii

This question is truly up to you and depends on your budget and other commitments.

I would recommend no less than 3 days on each island, with my ideal number being 5 days on each.

Remember #7 from My Top Tips To Get The Most Out Of Every Trip? It is really important to set an appropriate pace expectation for the type of trip you want to have. I would suggest enough days on each island so that you can have at least one unplanned day for relaxation and exploration!

Don’t forget to factor in travel days, as the flight to and from Hawaii for many of us can mean losing days on either end of the trip.

Princeville Resort

princeville resort kauai hi

Located on the north side of the island of Kauai, the Princeville Resort offers the most beautiful views right from their exceptional rooms. Quiet and calm, with excellent food, service, and pristine pools and beachfront, you cannot beat a stay at this resort for your honeymoon!

Things To Do:

Helicopter Tours: The island of Kauai is best seen by air! As only about 10% of the island is developed, taking a helicopter ride is one of the best ways to see all the beauty around you. In under an hour, you can explore so much and make memories that will last forever. This is the exact ride we took from Princeville (only a 10 minute drive from the resort): Discover Kauai. We would highly recommend it!

Visit Waimea Canyon: If you rented a car, you can take a drive to the top of Waimea Canyon to take in the expanse of the “grand canyon of the pacific”. For those who like to hike, bike, or do other tours, there are plenty of options available for that as well.

Take A Trip On The River To The Fern Grotto: Hop on a boat and be serenaded by some beautiful Hawaiian singing on your way to the fern grotto. A short walk up to the platform shows you this unique and beautiful sight. Definitely something worth seeing during your time in Kauai!

Relax On A Catamaran And See The Na Pali Coast: Sit back and relax as you feel the wind against your face on a beautiful catamaran ride up the Na Pali Coast. You will be awestruck by the views that are unlike anything else you can see in the world.

Experience Waikiki Beach: Whether swimming, surfing, boating, or just walking, you need to spend some time on the lovely Waikiki Beach! There are numerous things to do and, of course, great people watching.

Visit Pearl Harbor: A trip to Pearl Harbor is something you will never forget. Hearing about the history and experiencing the place is humbling and such an important thing to do to remember and honor the memories of those who lost their lives. You will be amazed at how well it is done and how much you will learn.

Explore The North Shore: Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and head of up the north shore of Oahu. You will be surprised by how different the coast looks! Explore the small surfing towns and see some of the most famous surfing beaches in the world.

Go To The Polynesian Cultural Center: The Polynesian Cultural Center is a world all it’s own. It is a place where villages are recreated of different Polynesian islands and you learn about the history, how they lived, worked, and their culture. It is a blast! This is the ultimate resort for a honeymoon as it offers luxury and romance in one of the most beautiful islands in Hawaii.

Things To Do:

Go To The Top Of Haleakala Crater: Haleakala is the now dormant volcano that is responsible for creating the island of Maui. It is a short hour and a half drive up to the summit where you will literally be above the clouds! This is a popular place for many to watch the sunrise or sunset, but is beautiful to visit anytime of day.

Drive On The Road To Hana: I might go so far as to say, I don’t think anyone should visit Maui without going on the Hana highway! The drive from Paia to Hana is about 2.5 hours, but there are numerous beautiful activities to do along the way. It was an absolute highlight of our time on Maui and I would highly recommend it!

Hang Out In Lahaina: The city of Lahaina has a wonderful history, great shops and restaurants, and lots to see and experience. It is a great place to spend the day wandering around and exploring while taste testing much of the local fare.

Other Things To Know When Going To Hawaii For Your Honeymoon:

  • Pack lots of sunscreen! It is more expensive to buy sunscreen there, so save yourself some bucks and plan ahead.
  • Bring a phone charger for the car. Then you’ll never have to worry about the navigation killing your battery when you’re out exploring.
  • Bring a rain jacket or poncho. On islands like Kauai, it will rain at least a little bit everyday and you don’t want it to hold you back.
  • Book activities in advance. That way you can make sure to fit in all your “must-do” items without having to stress.
  • Plan more time to get places. Most speed limits are significantly slower in Hawaii. A 5 mile drive you may think will take 15 minutes could actually take 30!

Now I want to hear from you! Are you planning a honeymoon to Hawaii? What is on your “must-do” list?
