If Iceland is on your bucket list of must-see destinations but you’re concerned about finding gluten free and vegan options in Reykjavik – I can relate!
When traveling to new places I typically like to find options for modified allergy-friendly versions of the typical foods eaten in that area.
Unfortunately, when I first started researching traditional Icelandic dishes I was concerned.
Many of the “traditional foods” are out of my comfort zone – some because I could actually die from eating them (i.e. shellfish), and some others because I emotionally can’t think of certain animals as food (i.e. puffin).
Considering what it must have been like for the first settlers to live in the frozen tundra of Iceland, it makes sense why their diet consisted of these foods – it was all they had to survive on!
Luckily, in modern-day Reykjavik, the culinary options are much more diverse – including being vegan and allergy-friendly!
I was thrilled to find entirely vegan and entirely gluten free restaurants in the heart of the city of Reykjavik.
It was also a good sign that they were all extremely busy, but no surprise because they were also absolutely delicious!

These were some of my favorite gluten free, dairy free, and vegan restaurant experiences in Reykjavik:
Glo
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan
If you’re vegan, Glo is going to be your favorite new go-to spot in Reykjavik! The menu consists of salads, burgers, wraps, bowls and amazing desserts. At Glo you order and pay at the counter and can sit down at the table until they call your name. It has a modern, comfortable vibe and was absolutely packed when we were there.
Everything is entirely vegan, yet even the meat-eaters in our group were satisfied with their meals. They are also able to accommodate gluten free eaters with ease, so you can eat with confidence!

Rio Reykjavik
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
Gluten free and vegan Mexican food options in Reykjavik? You bet! Rio Reykjavik is a modern festive space down by the harbor with excellent service and even better food. The staff was extremely knowledgable about food allergies which always makes me feel more confident. They even offered me a vegan lemon mayo for dipping my chips because I can’t have cheese or tomato. I couldn’t have been happier being able to have tacos while in Iceland!
Joylato
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
Joylato is 100% gluten free! You read that right. They offer gelato with loads of toppings and freshly made crepes, with many dairy free and vegan options. In fact, the only topping that is not vegan is the caramel, so you can treat yourself to some allergy-friendly sweet treats while exploring Reykjavik.
Eldur And Is
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
Crepes are amazing at the gluten free and vegan friendly Eldur and Is in Reykjavik. I will mention, they do not have a dedicated crepe maker and only clean it off well between the regular and gluten free crepes. The gluten free batter is also vegan. They have sweet and savory options for inside the crepes including items like vegan cheese! You can pick and choose whatever might fit your fancy. I can’t forget to mention that vegan ice cream is also on the menu!

Islenski Barinn – The Icelandic Bar
Gluten Free | Dairy Free | Egg Free | Vegan Options
If you’re looking for traditional Icelandic food options in Reykjavik, you should consider checking out Islenski Barinn. This restaurant was highly recommended to us by some people we met on a tour. Based on that, we decided to give it a shot.
When I looked at the menu I was definitely surprised! It isn’t usual that somewhere with whale, shark, and puffin on the menu also offered vegan options like burgers. For many vegans, this restaurant may not be a good fit because they serve those certain items. On the other hand, if you’re traveling with meat-eaters who want to try traditional Icelandic food, this could be worth a stop. The variety of options could satisfy everyone in your group!
Admittedly, the food here was delicious! They offered menu items like vegan cream cheese and gluten free vegan bread. You can feel that you’re really being treated to a delicious meal and not just settling for a salad here!
